Dreaming …

kandinsky-stgeorge-RheumaBlog“Fantasy is silver and scarlet, indigo and azure, obsidian veined with gold and lapis lazuli. Reality is plywood and plastic done up in mud brown and olive drab. Fantasy tastes of habaneros and honey, cinnamon and cloves, rare red meat and wines as sweet as summer. Reality is beans and tofu, and ashes at the end. Reality is the strip malls of Burbank, the smokestacks of Cleveland, a parking garage in Newark. Fantasy is the towers of Minas Tirith, the ancient stones of Gormenghast, the halls of Camelot. Fantasy flies on the wings of Icarus, reality on Southwest Airlines. Why do our dreams become so much smaller when they finally come true?”

    • I guess it is, Penguin, sort of. Martin’s quote appealed to me because I’ve loved fantasy stories and novels since the early 70s, when I first read The Hobbit. It hooked me for good. Fantasy is always so much more beautiful in the imagination than the mundane reality life faces us with, which is why I always return to it. I’ve been a captive to my wild imagination my whole life.

You might have noticed I’ve used that particular painting by Kandinsky for RheumaBlog for many years, now. It’s actually St. George battling the Dragon (like me and my rheuma-dragon), but the Camelot idea fits it well, too. Love the castle on the hill in the distance. And I’ve never been quite sure about the pretty lady in the painting. Was St. George rescuing her, or is it actually Guinevere? Both work, don’t they. 🙂

  1. A reality with beans and tofu is not too bad, depends on the cook . . .
But yes, that gap between reality and fantasy is vast and if you apply it to show the difference between a healthy life (what’s that btw?) and one with illhealth/chronic illness, we could hang our heads most of the time. Still, I find dreaming wonderful and sustaining. Regardless of how healthy I am.
